WCCO Interview: Alive At The Market

THIS SATURDAY WILL MARK THE FIVE-YEAR ANNIVERSARY OF THE ALIVE AT THE MARKET EVENT TO RAISE AWARENESS FOR MEN’S DEPRESSION. LORI, WE’RE LOOKING AT PICTURE OF YOUR BROTHER ERIC, AND THIS IS WHY THIS EVENT STARTED, RIGHT? YEP THAT IS CORRECT. YEAH, IT’S — SADLY, LOST MY BROTHER TO HIS, UH, BATTLE WITH DEPRESSION AND, UM, ANXIETY BACK IN 2010. AND THAT SAME SUMMER, UH, A FRIEND, CHRIS MILES, AND I GOT TOGETHER AND REALLY WANTED TO PUT ON SOMETHING TO COMMEMORATE ERIC AND, UH, ERIC WAS ACTUALLY — HE WAS A GRAPHIC DESIGNER BUT WAS MADE A NAME FOR HIMSELF AS A STAND-UP COMIC AROUND THE TWIN CITIES. HIS STAGE NAME WAS ERIC PAGE. SO ESSENTIALLY WE WANTED TO PUT TOGETHER AN EVENT THAT WAS ALL ABOUT EVERYTHING ERIC LOVED, WHICH WOULD BE COMEDY, LIVE MUSIC, AND, OF COURSE, GREAT FOOD. YOU THINK IN FIVE YEARS — WE’RE STARTING TO TALK ABOUT DEPRESSION AND, SPECIFICALLY MEN’S DEPRESSION, BUT IT’S STILL SO HARD FOR PEOPLE TO SAY, “HEY, I’M DEPRESSED” OR “I NEED HELP” OR “I NEED RESOURCES.” WHERE HAVE YOU GUYS COME FROM AND WHERE DO YOU NEED TO GO? YEAH, GOOD QUESTION FOR MARK. AT THE FOUNDATION, THE ORGANIZATION THAT BENEFIT FROM THIS, WE HAVE GOTTEN GUYS TO COME FORWARD AND WE’RE HERE IN MINNEAPOLIS AND GUYS STARTING TO STEP FORWARD AND WE HAVE SEEN THAT GROWTH IN OUR GROUPS AND RETREAT AND ACTIVITIES SO HOPEFULLY WITH CONTINUED CONVERSATIONS WE’LL GET MEN TO CONTINUE — LORI DO YOU THINK SOME OF IT IS MEN — AND EVEN YOUR BROTHER — WAS HE AFRAID TO TALK ABOUT IT? WAS THERE A MACHO THING WHERE MEN CAN’T ADMIT THEY’RE HAVING DEPRESSION? ABSOLUTELY AND I JUST THINK — EVEN AS CLOSE AS WE WERE WERE, WE WERE TWO YEARS APART, IT WAS SOMETHING THAT I THINK HE WAS VERY UNCOMFORTABLE TO TALK ABOUT, TALK THROUGH, AND I KNOW THAT, UM, A GROUP LIKE FACE IT WOULD HAVE REALLY MEANT THE WORLD TO HIM. AND FOR YOU, PROBABLY, THE IDEA OF SUICIDE WAS NOT SOMETHING AS A SIBLING THAT ENTERED YOUR MIND, THAT THE DEPRESSION WAS THAT SEVERE. ABSOLUTELY, YES. AND THAT’S COMMON, RIGHT? ABSOLUTELY. PEOPLE HIDE AND IT DON’T SHOW PEOPLE — THEY DON’T LET ON TO HOW, YOU KNOW, HOW DEEPLY THEY’RE HURTING. AND WE DON’T UNDERSTAND SUICIDE. WE DON’T TALK ABOUT IT ENOUGH. THERE’S JUST 40,000 SUICIDES IN THE UNITED STATES EVERY YEAR AND OF THOSE 40,000, 32,000 ARE MEN. WOW. YOU GUYS MET IN AN INTERESTING WAY. THE TRAGEDY BROUGHT THE TWO OF YOU TOGETHER, BUT YOU HAVE REACHED $75,000 AND WANT TO GET TO $1,900,000 IN THIS FIFTH — $100,000 IN THIS FIFTH YEAR. ALIVE AT THE MARKET IS SATURDAY IN MINNEAPOLIS AT THE FARMER’S MARKET ANNEX FROM 4:00 TO 10:00 P.M. TICKETS ARE $40 BUT YOU GET SO MUCH — LIVE MUSIC, COMEDY, ALL THAT LORI WAS TALKING ABOUT. FOR MORE INFORMATION ON THE EVENT ITSELF, HEAD TO WCCO.COM/LINKS. THANK YOU FOR BEING HERE. THANK YOU.
