Top 10 Things You Didn’t Know About Donovan Mitchell! (NBA)

Utah Jazz shooting guard Donovan Vernell Mitchell
Jr. was selected 13th overall in the 2017 NBA Draft. EverythingTop10 is proud to present, “The
Top 10 Things You Didn’t Know About Donovan Mitchell!” #10. Mitchell was born on September 7, 1996 to
parents Donovan Mitchell Sr. and Nicole Mitchell. His father was a minor league baseball player
for seven seasons and was even a minor league coach for the New York Mets from 1999 until
2010. His father now serves as director of player
relations and community engagement for the Mets. He has a younger sister named Jordan. He was born and raised in Elmsford, New York
and attended Greenwich Country Day School in Greenwich, Connecticut. #9. He played baseball and was a star shortstop. With his father, he would hang around minor-league
players from the Mets. Scott Kazmir was a star pitcher in the Mets’
minor-league system, and the player Mitchell felt closest to. When Kazmir was traded, seven-year-old Mitchell
cried. After that, Mitchell looked up to David Wright. He noticed that although Wright was a big
star, he would always sign autographs for kids. Wright even let him hold his cleats in the
locker room once. He wanted to be just like Wright. A David Wright poster was the first poster
he hung on his wall as a kid. #8. Mitchell played his AAU basketball for The
City and Riverside Hawks programs based out of New York City. In 2010, he was present at the Boys and Girls
Club of Greenwich when LeBron James announced he would sign with the Miami Heat. He attended Canterbury School in New Milford,
Connecticut for his sophomore year of high school before transferring to Brewster Academy
in Wolfeboro, New Hampshire for his final two years. In the 10th grade, he broke his wrist while
playing baseball and that prevented him from playing AAU baseball in the summer. That is when he shifted his focus to basketball
full-time. He said that his career path would have been
baseball if he had not broken his wrist. #7. When he started to focus on basketball at
Brewster, he garnered more attention from college basketball coaches. A dunk he had at an Under Armor-sponsored
event in Brooklyn while he was in high school became legendary, and was featured on SportsCenter
that night. He committed to the University of Louisville
to play college basketball. #6. Mitchell decided to wear the jersey number
45, showing his appreciation for Michael Jordan, as 45 is the number Jordan wore for his baseball
career and during the early part of his first comeback in 1995. As a freshman at the University of Louisville,
he averaged 7.4 points. As a sophomore, he averaged 15.6 points. After his sophomore season, he entered the
2017 NBA Draft. He spent much of the spring of 2017 considering
returning to college for his junior year until Chris Paul and Paul George convinced him to
enter the draft. #5. On July 11, 2017, he signed a multi-year shoe
deal with Adidas. He is also partnered with BodyArmor. During the 2017-2018 NBA season, he appeared
on the cover of SLAM Magazine and starred in a documentary called “Rookie on the Rise.” The docu-series followed him on his race for
the Rookie of the Year. His favorite basketball player is LeBron James,
and LeBron is also his favorite actor. He has had multiple dinners with Dwayne Wade
in 2018, and Wade has given him a lot of advice. Wade also helped him with understanding how
to be a businessman on top of just being an athlete. He has received basketball advice from James
Harden and Kobe Bryant as well. The two moments from his NBA career that stood
out the most to him are when he won the dunk contest, and when he eliminated the Thunder
in Game 6 in the 2018 playoffs. #4. Mitchell’s most favorite dunk ever at the
dunk contest was Aaron Gordon’s mascot dunk. His favorite part of All-Star Weekend was
always the dunk contest. He didn’t care about the All-Star Game,
the Three-Point contest, or the Skills Challenge. When he won the dunk contest, he only had
two weeks to prepare because he was an injury replacement for Aaron Gordon. He said that he will definitely compete in
the dunk contest again, but he is not sure when. #3. He watches a lot of film. He considers watching basketball as “studying
film.” He watches at least one or two games every
single night, and that is around four hours of film right there. He then watches any film or clips on top of
that. In Utah, The Gateway renamed the pedestrian
walking bridge that goes over 100 South as the Donovan Mitchell Bridge. The bridge features a mural of Mitchell created
by Salt Lake City artists. According to his collegiate bio, his favorite
basketball team is the Cleveland Cavaliers. #2. Mitchell is currently dating Deja Lighty. She is the daughter of late hip-hop mogul
Chris Lighty. She served as a Basketball Recruiter for Temple
University. She also worked as an Account Executive with
the Cleveland Cavaliers. #1. When he was younger, he didn’t think school
was so important. He just loved recess, gym, and lunch. His mother wanted him to prioritize education
over sports. Coaches would tell his mother that she was
ruining his sports life when she would not allow him to go to games or tournaments because
he didn’t finish his homework. His mother didn’t want him to only focus
on sports. He sang in the choir and had a duet in a school
production of “Oliver!”. He also played the drums in school concerts. At the end of his junior year in high school,
he ran for senior prefect, which is similar to class president, and he won. He promised his mother that he would finish
getting his college degree. He takes online classes in the summer at the
University of Louisville to chip away at his degree. He wants to get his degree because he wants
to be a broadcaster someday and believes it will help him. He recently bought his mother a new Audi truck. That’s all folks! Please leave a like if you enjoyed the video

should have won Rookie of the Year over Ben Simmons! See you next time!
