I would say that winning the FIA GT title in 2015 was my personal sporting highlight. It’s the GT World Championship in one race, a World Cup, and winning it meant a lot to me. I’m Maro Engel, I’m 33 years old, I’m a racing driver and Laureus ambassador since 2018. I’m passionate about sports, of course in particular everything that has to do with engines and racing. Speed, precision, anything where time matters has always been my passion. I am so happy that I was able to turn this passion into a career. I believe that starting with sports at an early age, just like me and most athletes, is something very positive because it gives you values that I think are important in life: working hard on yourself, improving, discipline is very important. Team spirit, especially in motorsport we work with very big teams and it’s extremely important that you work together with every single team member and that the whole team works as one in order to be successful. I think that these values, to work in a professional way from an early age, these values, which I am very happy to have, should be passed on to every young person. I’ve been in contact with Laureus for several years now. Mercedes AMG has launched AMG “Passion for Good”, an initiative to support Laureus. With every kilometer that our factory-supported racing cars drive, one euro is donated and, of course, during a season quite a lot of kilometers are covered, especially in long-distance races, 24-hour races. I’ve visited KICKFORMORE in Speyer several times and of course you build up a relationship with the children there and you can see the evolution. When you see how important it is for the children to play football every week, what it gives to them and how they develop, that’s definitely the most impressive thing for me. That’s what shows me that everything works and that the project is a full success. But, in the end, I think that the most touching part is when you get to be with the children during the project visits and spend time with them. Partners like IWC and also Mercedes-Benz make it possible to cover the costs of the foundation work without having to use the money from the donations. This means, the donations can go entirely into the projects, directly to where help is needed. That is a huge privilege and it’s very special for Laureus to have these possibilities thanks to such strong partners. What is also special about the cooperation between Laureus and IWC is that, every year, there is a new Laureus Edition IWC watch and this year it’s the Aquatimer 2019. It is limited to 1’000 pieces and what’s remarkable, this is why I’m taking it off, is that a winner drawing is chosen from many participants for the back. This year’s motto is “Time to Learn” and 15-year old Melan from Sri Lanka designed this drawing, which can be seen on the back of these 1’000 watches.
