Redskins hope for answers in preseason opener

TWO DAYS BEFORE THEIR FIRST PRE- SEASON GAME OF THE YEAR AND STILL NO FRONT RUNNER AS COACH JAY GRUDEN LOOKS TO FIND HIS STARTING QUARTERBACK FOR THIS SEASON. I’M BRUCE RADER, WHILE MOST NFL COACHES USE THE FIRST PRE-SEASON GAME TO LOOK AT THE FRINGE PLAYERS TRYING TO MAKE THE TEAM THE REDSKINS HAVE SO MANY QUESTIONS MARKS IN SO MANY POSISTIONS WHO KNOWS WHO WILL PLAY IN CLEVELAND THURSDAY WHEN THE REDSKINS GET THEIR FIRST REAL ACTION OF THE PRE-SEASON AGAINST THE BROWNS. NATHAN EPSTIEN IS RICHMOND HE HAS LATEST FROM TRAINING CAMP. IN THE TEAM’S FINAL PRACTICE BEFORE THEIR FIRST TEST, CASE KEENUM RECEIVED A BULK OF THE FIRST TEAM REPS, AND LOOKED PRETTY STRONG, THROWING A PAIR TOUCHDOWNS. COLT MCCOY WAS BACK ON THE FIELD AFTER LIMPING OFF THE WITH A MINOR INJURY YESTERDAY— BUT EVERYBODY UNDER THE HOT SUN WONDERING WHEN WE’LL GET TO SEE THE REDSKINS’ BRIGHT YOUNG STAR. (“HE’S GOT TO PLAY SOMETIME THERE. SO NOW IS AS GOOD A TIME AS ANY. WE’LL SEE HOW HE DOES. DWAYNE HASKINS HAS SHOWN PLENTY OF STRONG ARM ALL CAMP, BUT EVERYBODY INCLUDING COACH GRUDEN IS EAGER TO SEE HOW THE TEAM’S TOP PICK RESPONDS TO LIVE-GAME PRESSURE. BE KINDA COOL TO SEE HIM PRACTICE FIELD AND SEE HOW IT TRANSITIONS TO REAL GAME SITUATIONS. AND HOW HE HANDLES THE HUDDLE, CADANCE, ANTICIPATION, ACCURACY AND ALL THAT GOOD STUFF. “) I THINK DWAYNE HAS A LOT OF POTENTIAL TO BE REALLY GOOD. HE HAS A REALLY A REALLY STRONG ARM, PROBABLY THE STRONGEST ARM I’VE EVER SEEN OUT OF A QUARTERBACK. EACH AND EVERY WEEK HE PROVES THAT HE CAN GET BETTER AND BETTER BUT OF COURSE AS A TEAR ON THE FIRST DRIVE IN THE FIRST PRESEASON GAME LAST YEAR. HE DELT WITH A MINOR HAMSTRING ISSUE AT THE START OF CAMP BUT HAS BEEN IMPRESSIVE SINCE. WHETHER NOR NOT HE PLAYS IN THIS GAME OR NOT WILL STILL BE DETERMINED. WE COULD WAIT ANOTHER WEEK OR TWO FOR HIM, BUT HE’S READY TO GO. HE’S EXPLOSIVE, DONE SOME REALLY GOOD THINGS SO FAR, AND I THINK WE CAN STILL BE A LITTLE MORE PATIENT WITH HIM, BUT HE LOOKS GREAT RIGHT NOW. SO HAS RECEIVER TERRY MCCLAURIN, THE TEAM’S THIRD-ROUND PICK OUT OF OHIO STATE WHO’S ITCHING FOR HIS FIRST NFL ACTION. I FEEL LIKE FINALLY MAKING IT IS WALKING OUT THERE FOR YOUR FIRST OFFICIAL GAME, SO THAT’LL BE REALLY EXCITING FOR MYSELF. A LOT OF BUTTERFLIES, BUT I”M JUST TRYING TO COMPARTMENTALIZE AND GO OUT THERE AND EXECUTE. ROOKIE LINEBACKER MONTEZ SWEAT, THE TEAM’S SECOND OVERALL PICK THIS YEAR, WAS BACK ON THE FIELD FOR THE FIRST TIME IN FOUR PRACTICES, DEALING WITH A LOWER LEG INJURY. HE DIDN’T DO MUCH, AND COACH GRUDEN SAIAD BEFORE TODAY’S PRACTICE HE’S NOT SURE YET WHETHER OR NOT HE’LL TRAVEL TO CLEVELAND. FROM REDSKINS TRAINING CAMP, NATHAN EPSTEIN FOR THE SPORTSWRAP.
