NHL Now: Zach Werenski Discusses the Jackets’ 3-0 Series Lead (Apr. 15, 2019)

Speaker 1: First off congratulations a heck of a serious for you guys so far. Speaker 2: Yeah. Thank you. Thank you guys for having me. It’s kind of fun so far. Speaker 1: Well it is serious. It looks like you guys are having fun from your standpoint do you think this might be the best that your team has played all season. Speaker 2: You know I think so. I think there’s no real secret to what we’re doing. Speaker 1: You know everyone is just buying into everyone’s playing a team game and I think the most important thing is everyone’s having a ton of fun with it and that’s the best way to play hockey. So once you’ve been out here now what you got to keep it going. Speaker 2: Yes you do. You got to keep it going. That’s the way these things work and one thing you guys have kept going at least in the postseason is your powerplay. It has really come to life and it’s been great so far. It’s been the best power play in the playoffs Marty St. Louis came aboard and joined your group to kind of help is that kind of a part time coach and help on the power play. Speaker 1: What has he been able to bring to the table for you guys to help you get this powerplay moving in the right direction. Speaker 2: Yeah I think with Marty coming in it kind of gives you that outside voice sometimes as a player things can kind of get repetitive throughout the season and you can kind of lose meaning almost and I love Marty coming in and seeing it from a different from a different perspective and kind of having an outside voice you know someone that’s played the game in acquisitions he’s been through it you know he’s helped us more than just our power play myself with a ton of things. So for him to come in kind of halfway through the year and help us out there it’s been a huge success for us so far hey Zach since the trade deadline it hasn’t been smooth sailing all the way in fact right down to the wire the last couple of days just to get into the playoffs and now you guys are playing with consistency in your best hockey. Was there a moment a meeting a game that you could pinpoint that turn things around or you felt it like your team was coming together. Yeah I think I do. I think we all knew since that doesn’t mean we were a really good hockey team that was just putting this together and kind of having that collective buy in from everybody. You know we went in that western on a road trip and things weren’t great in Edmonton and we lost we felt great and then we got to Vancouver and we had some honest dealings with each others modest discussions and we kind of flipped the switch and had that whole team buy in and you know since then we’ve been playing some really good hockey team hockey and you know like I said we just get to keep on moving forward here. Speaker 1: Zack I’m sure this is the first time you’re gonna hear someone say this but heading into this series there weren’t a whole lot of people that were picking the Columbus Blue Jackets to beat the Tampa Bay Lightning or do even really have a shot against them and here you guys are up three games tonight. I’m just curious if that sort of put a chip on your shoulder or on the shoulder of the team in the room and if that helped motivate you guys like you know what we’re a good team we’re gonna prove people wrong yeah I mean I think you know for us it was more about just going out there and playing our game. We know we know we’re a good team when we play the way we can and you know before Game 1 you know versus speech Hey can I just say we know we ought to have that belief in your own. Anything can happen. And you know I think from that moment on we’ll have at least we’ll have that feeling and you know like I said we know we’re going hockey team we play the way we can. And so far it’s you know it’s been working out for us. I thought I could beat the Tampa Bay Lightning after listening to that. Speaks. With I and my flair for sure. All right. So that really was a good speech. And that was before the game and then like 20 minutes later it was three nothing Tampa. And it looked like it was the script that we had seen during the regular season when you guys met what was said amongst the players after that first 20 minutes because certainly you guys were able to kind of weather that storm and then move on from there. What was said in the room after the first period of Game 1. Speaker 2: Yeah. I mean not too much was that I think we on the look we had to do. You know there was never a moment in that game that I felt out of that even though we were down for nothing. You know I think you know at that time in the game we all kind of had that same feeling like we can do something special here if we all pull together and you know fully on stuff that the captain said a few things. A couple other guys said some stuff and we just got back on the ice to start playing our game and. Had a great comeback on that one and then just kept them off the road and moving forward. Speaker 1: Zach being up 3 all you’re going to hear a lot of cliche terms and takes to win and you have to stay focused and all those kinds of kinds of things and from the media and all sorts of things. Speaker 2: But for you guys. And what did you talk about I mean Coach Tortorella in his post game press conference very even keeled has that been the message that you’ve won nothing yet. Moving forward here you’re up 3 0. That’s it yeah for sure. You know we’re still two minutes late that spoke first but we’ve never won a playoff series before. We have been to the postseason too many times so you know we’re just taking the taking tomorrow night is just another game and just to go out there and do what we do well and play the way we can. You know it’s it’s no realistic it’s our success. We’re just playing hard and playing as a team. So tomorrow night’s game with them is going to be a heck of an atmosphere too in Columbus. Speaker 1: I just want to get from your standpoint playing in front of those fans what a playoff series win would mean to hockey fans in Columbus because I don’t think people realize how passionate the fan base actually is there. Speaker 2: Yeah the fans here are unbelievable. You know they deserve this. They deserve this and a ton more so hopefully we can give that song. You know they’ve been they’ve been with us since the day I got here and even before that. So I haven’t had too much to celebrate like I said no no playoff wins no playoff series wins. So hopefully we can do better in this year. Speaker 1: You ever heard that loud not Billy I couldn’t even hear the cannon I had last night wasn’t saying no it was still fun to be a part of.
