MLB: 2017 All-Star Game Betting Preview and Picks

The Major League Baseball all-star game is
upon us and some might assume the best approach to handicapping an all-star game is to simply
flip a coin, but this is not the case. The National League opened as a -115 favorite
with the American League coming back at -105, and taking a look up and down the rosters,
it looks like the underdogs have the edge. The league’s top pitcher, Clayton Kershaw,
won’t be active due to starting on Sunday while several of the NL’s other big arms
will be pitching on much shorter than normal rests. Yes, pitchers usually only get an inning of
work in during these games, but with fresher arms to roll out each inning, I think the
AL has the advantage on the mound. If betting trends are your thing you’ll
be interested to know that the American League has absolutely dominated this game, not just
for years, but for decades! They’ll ride a four game win streak into
the game and have won it a ridiculous 22 of the last 29 times. If you’re considering homefeild advantage
when doing your handicapping — don’t. For the senior circuit, it’s been more of
a homefeild disadvantage, as the AL has won 8 of the last 10 all-star games in NL ballparks. These trends and the American League’s advantage
on the bump makes them my pick to win the midsummer classic. The total for the game is set at 9 runs, and
when most people think all-star games, they tend to think extremely high scoring games,
but these people need to think again. Over the last 10 years, the game has averaged
a total of just 6.7 runs and it hasn’t eclipsed the 9 run mark since 2005. There’s not a whole lot else for me to think
about here, I’ll be taking the UNDER. If you’re feeling a little greedy or you’re
desperate to get in on some additional all-star game betting, consider getting better value
by taking the team of your choice on the -1.5 runline. These haven’t been very tightly contested
games the past few season as seven straight winners have won by two runs or more. That’s it for my look at the betting lines
for the 2017 MLB all-star game, good luck with your bets, and as always, keep chasing
that paper!
