Looking at comics through a scholarly lens

– I’m an english professor
who studies comic books. I see comics as a window
on the US experience. They chronical the aspirations and anxieties that define modern society. I’m particularly interested
in race, space, and power. Examining comics through a scholarly lens can tell us a lot about who we are and a lot of my research provides context to why comics matter. Michigan State University is home to the largest publicly available comic art collection in the world. It’s the reason I came here. Being able to work with the collection has provided me with
unparalleled opportunities from the way I teach to helping to curate the academic narrative
at the MSU Comics Forum. I’m always thinking about how to make MSU a destination for serious
conversations about comics. My name is Julian
Chambliss and I am Spartan.
