Hello, this is Dr. Michael Gott I’m an orthopedic–a sports medicine doctor for Westchester Health Orthopedics and Sports Medicine. Today like we have done the rest of the weeks this season we are going to outline an injury in the NFL that may be affecting your fantasy team. If you own Arian Foster you know he tore his achilles tendon this past Sunday. The achilles tendon is very important for explosive movements like running and jumping. It’s the tendon that attaches the gastro muscle or calf muscles to your heal and allows your toes to plantar flex or for you to explode up. Once again, extremely important when running and jumping. The unfortunate reality of an Achilles tendon rupture in any high level professional or collegiate athlete is the return to play data is very bad. Specifically in the NFL one study looked at thirty-one NFL players who had thirty-one ruptures between 1997 and 2002. Overall, more than one-third of these players could not return to play at all. The ones that did return to play, they had a significant decrease in their ratings at their specific postion. If you were a running back for example, you had an 83% decrease in how you were ranked among the other players in the NFL. So Arian Foster’s injury was unlike the other injuries he sustained throughout his career which were ACL injuries, hamstring injuries which he played with. This injury may be the one that unfortunately ends his career. So if you own Arian Foster in lets say a keeper league, its somebody you may think about not keeping for next year because the chances of him coming back and playing at a high level are very, very low. Once again, this is Dr. Michael Gott signing off.
